Should children be reading fluently by the end of Foundations B?

One day last fall, a customer wrote us with a great question about her son's progress in reading fluency:

I have a question concerning Foundations. I started Foundations A with my son last fall when he was 5 1/2. He enjoyed Foundations A and did fine with the work. We started Foundations B in January or February and did well at first but about halfway through he stopped enjoying it — I suspect because he was overwhelmed with the reading portion.

The purpose of Foundations spelling lists

Each lesson in LOE Foundations includes a spelling list. The process of teaching students how to read and spell words is the heart of Foundations lessons, the place where all the skills they are learning come together.

However, sometimes students struggle with this portion of the lessons when their parent or teacher misinterprets the goal. Traditional spelling lists, which many of us are more used to, present words to be copied and memorized. Foundations spelling lists have an entirely different purpose: developing reading fluency through a process called spelling analysis.

Essentials Workbook Changes

  • Logic of English will no longer be offering the Essentials Cursive Workbook.
  • Our next printing of Essentials will not have either a cursive or a manuscript version. It will be handwriting-neutral, usable with either style.
  • In the meantime, the workbook that says “manuscript” will be used as the workbook for all Essentials students. Students may complete the exercises in manuscript or cursive.
