Each week students write words that appear to be exceptions to spelling rules, or words they simply do not understand why they are read and spelled in a particular manner. Students then place these words in a Crazy Words Box placed in their classroom. Denise then selects five words from the box to explain on video.

Spelling List 9 An alternative spelling list for Lesson 9 of the Logic of English Essentials Curriculum. This list introduces new Phonograms: au, aw, augh
Spelling List 8 is an alternative list for Logic of English Essentials. This list incorporates two new phonograms: igh and wh. No new spelling rules are taught with List 8. Though the list provides students the opportunity to practice previously learned rules.
Spelling List 7 is an alternative list for Logic of English Essentials. This list includes two new Latin prefixes that will aid students in developing vocabulary. In addition, this lesson adds the phonograms - oa and oe. No new spelling rules are taught with List 7. Though the list provides students the opportunity to practice previously learned rules. We highly recommend completing Part 1 of Lesson 7 in the Essentials program before studying this list. Part 1 includes a valuable lesson on the multiple spellings of the long /o/ sound.
Spelling List 6 is an alternative list for Logic of English Essentials Lesson 6. Students who complete Part 1 of Lesson 6 (pages 57-61) before watching the video will gain the most from this lesson. It is also recommended to introduce how to form a plural found in Part 3 on pages 64-65. Note: At this time we do not have a Spelling List 5. This is because Essentials Lesson 5 is a review of the previous four lessons. This lesson adds the phonograms - ar, ch, oo.
Spelling List 4 is an alternative list for Logic of English Essentials Lesson 4.Students will practice words that use the phonograms and rules from previous lessons as well as the phonograms: ai, ay, oi, and oy. They will also be using the spelling rules: English words do not end in I, U, V, or J; When a word ends in A it says /ä/; and AY ususally spells the long /ā/ sound at the end of a baseword.
Spelling List 3 corresponds with Lesson 3 of the Logic of English Essentials Curriculum. These spelling words use the Phonograms: er, or, ea, and sh. They also use the spelling rule: A, E, O, U usually say their names at the end of the syllable."
Spelling List 2 is an alternative spelling list to accompany Lesson 2 of The Logic of English Essentials Curriculum. This list incorporates the phonograms A-Z, ck, ee, ng, th, and Spelling Rule 26: CK is used only after a single vowel which says its short sound.
Spelling List 1 includes an alternative list to accompany Lesson 1 of The Logic of English Essentials Curriculum. This spelling list is ideal for adult students who desire to improve their spelling or reading skills, ESL and EFL students. It is also an ideal spelling list for upper elementary through high school. Ideally students will complete Lesson 1 Part 1 of the Essentials Curriculum. However, these lessons may also stand alone.
