Logic of English for ELL, ESL and EFL

The Logic of English series provides English language learners an efficient method to master reading, spelling, writing, and grammar. The materials also boost speaking and listening skills through vocabulary development, learning to hear and pronounce the 45 sounds of English, and systematic teaching of sentence structure.

The Logic of English Essentials Curriculum is ideal for teaching reading, writing, and sentence structure to English language students ages 7 and up. Each lesson begins by learning a new multi-letter phonogram or spelling rule and practicing the sounds of English with Exploring the Sounds activities. Plenty of practice activities are included to ensure that all students master the basic building blocks of English words.

Fifteen high frequency vocabulary words are taught in Part 2 of each lesson. Sample sentences are included as well as detailed explanations about why each word is read and spelled in a particular manner. Numerous derivatives are also included for each word and can be used to rapidly expand students’ vocabularies.

Daniel receives a gift copy of Uncovering the Logic of English after training with the Essentials Curriculum. He is excited to teach others back in his home town.

Part 3 of each lesson consists of a grammar lesson and dictation, composition, and vocabulary development activities. As students learn to read and write words in English they are also taught how to assemble the words into phrases, then simple sentences, and later increasingly complex sentences. Teaching students systematically ensures they understand how to assemble words into English sentences when writing. Grammar lessons also cover usage, punctuation, and common errors.

Vocabulary development activities teach students how to efficiently master a large English vocabulary by teaching them the relationship of words, roots, suffixes, and prefixes as they are combined in English to form new words. In this way students learn the tools to not only decode any word in English but also to infer meaning.

Students then have the opportunity to practice the phonograms, rules, words, and grammar through dictation and then composition activities. Each step of the way students are supported so that they master the material and are not left to guess.

Numerous optional practice activities are included in the Teacher’s Manual in order to provide ESL and EFL students adequate practice to ensure mastery.

Uncovering the Logic of English provides second language students an efficient method for learning how to read and spell in English. In an easy-to-read style, the book lays out the 74 basic phonograms and 30 spelling rules which logically describe 98% of English words. Uncovering the Logic of English may be used by ESL/EFL teachers and tutors, or read by second language learners who desire to improve their English reading and spelling skills.

The Logic of English Reference Chart summarizes the rules and phonograms in a durable fold-out reference chart. Both teachers and students benefit by having a quick reference of the material at hand.

Additional Supplements

The Basic Phonogram Cards should be purchased by all ESL/EFL teachers. These durable, coated flashcards are an efficient way to practice the sounds and phonograms which describe the most commonly used words in English. These cards are required with the Logic of English Essentials Curriculum. Many people also purchase the cards to integrate with other curriculum.

The Advanced Phonogram Cards explain less-frequently used vocabulary words. They are beneficial for older ESL/EFL students who are trying to expand their vocabularies, especially students in high school or college.

The Spelling Rule Cards illustrate the spelling rules with sample words on the back of each card. They are also beneficial for drilling the spelling rules to ensure long term mastery. These cards are scheduled in The Logic of English Essentials Curriculum and are highly recommended as an additional method of practice. All the rules are repeated in the Teacher’s Manual and can be recited orally; therefore, these cards are considered optional.

The Grammar Rule Cards are beneficial for teaching the parts of speech, punctuation rules, sentence styles, sentence types, and more in order to help students build a solid foundation in reading and writing. These cards are scheduled in the Teacher’s Manual and are highly recommended. However, since the rules are clearly stated in the Teacher's Manual to aid recitation, the cards are considered optional.
