The Logic of English® is a systematic multi-sensory approach to learning how to read, spell and write. The method is based upon 74 basic phonograms and 30 spelling rules which explain 98% of English words. Learning these essential tools eliminates unnecessary exceptions, explains hundreds of commonly misspelled words and brings order to the English language. The Logic of English does not use any sight words. With this method students learn why words are read and spelled in a particular manner.
The Logic of English does not stop at the sound level of words, as do many systematic phonics programs. Rather, The Logic of English also incorporates the meanings of roots, suffixes and prefixes providing students with the tools not only to decode but to comprehend. These essential elements unlock the definitions of hundreds of thousands of words, speed vocabulary development and aid in developing fluidity in reading and spelling.
The Logic of English curriculum also incorporates sentence level grammar, punctuation rules, tenses, plurals and more. Students learn how to read and write in English in a systematic manner which eliminates guessing and limits the amount of rote memory work. Students are taught how to analyze words, use information they already know and develop connections to other words and content ensuring the success of all students.

Our books and curriculum provide a strong foundation to emerging readers, help older students develop strong spelling and writing skills, provide remedial help to struggling students, assist poor spellers of all ages and reveal the reasons behind spellings to otherwise proficient readers and spellers.

In the summer of 2010, our family was gathered together for a picnic. Denise had just given a lecture titled “The Logic of English.” As they had in previous months, people rushed forward with stories of their personal pain learning to read and spell. They asked, “Why didn’t someone tell me this before?” Others exclaimed, “I learned more about English in only 45 minutes than in all my years of school.” This response to Denise’s lecture exposed to our family the depths of the literacy crisis that is raging in our nation. Three generations decided that day to work together to make a difference.
As a family we had felt the pain of struggling readers and spellers, for in fact our journey truly began when Nathan and Denise’s children struggled to learn to read and spell.
As an ESL teacher and homeschool mother, Denise began to search for answers. She purchased countless books on reading and spelling and tossed them aside when they provided the same unsatisfactory answers she had learned in her own elementary education and in graduate school reading methods classes. Today she speaks about how she was also searching for answers to her own questions about English. Though she read extensively, she too struggled deeply with spelling. When she stumbled across the Orton-Gillingham method, a whole new way of learning to read and spell became apparent. She instantly saw the implications for her own education, as well as that of all her former students, and her own children.
Out of her passion, she began to give presentations to parents and teachers about “The Logic of English.” The response was a surprise to us all. People, many of whom had master’s degrees and Ph.D.’s in math, science, and engineering, began to confide in Denise about the deep pain and shame they felt in regards to learning to read.
During this time we discovered that our family’s struggle with written English was really a mirror for a much larger problem. Two-thirds of our nation’s students read below proficiency and far more struggle with spelling.
As we began to talk to parents we also discovered that the keys to how English works are too often locked behind gated doors where students need to either be diagnosed with dyslexia or to have fallen severely behind simply to be taught how English really works. We believe the knowledge of the Logic of English should be as common as 1+1=2 and accessible to everyone.
In this context, Denise and Nathan have dedicated themselves full time to the mission of Pedia Learning Inc. Nathan’s parents, Timothy and Beverly Eide, have provided practical and financial support, adding a second career to their already busy schedules. We are surrounded by friends and neighbors who believe in our work, encourage us, and provide daily help. Together we believe we can make a difference in the lives of individuals, families, schools, communities, and with your support, our nation.
As a family we feel we were being given an opportunity to make a difference. Reading education is the foundation to all academics and it is the foundation to the success of our country both economically and as a democracy. Our desire is to support parents, teachers, administrators, politicians, and community members as together we begin a grassroots movement to change how reading and spelling are taught so that everyone has the opportunity to become a proficient reader.
Pedia is an Anglicized form of the Greek word paideia meaning education and child. A Greek Paideia education included not only the mind but the whole person: intellectual, emotional, physical, relational, social and spiritual development. It represented a process of education aimed at creating a whole person. We think of it as "educating the whole child."
Pedia Learning Inc. seeks to become a leader in reversing and solving the literacy crisis in America. Our goal is to make the logic of English common knowledge among English speakers and increase awareness about sound teaching methods through publishing, curriculum development, and training. We are a company that seeks to build collaborative relationships with other literacy organizations and support research and product development for the service of English speakers worldwide.
Denise Eide is the author of the multiple award-winning book, Uncovering the Logic of English: A Common Sense Approach to Reading, Spelling, and Literacy, and The Logic of English series of curriculum and learning materials. She is passionate about changing how reading is taught for ALL students.Though she studied for her masters degree at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has taught EFL at the University of Pereslavl, Russia, and taught adult literacy in the United States, it was when her own children struggled with learning to read that she discovered the rules and phonograms developed by Dr. Orton. She immediately recognized how this vital information would have revolutionized learning to read and spell for her adult students and watched it transform the lives of her own children. In order to spread the great news that English is not riddled with exceptions, she put together a short presentation called the Logic of English and began speaking to teachers and parents. It was at this time that she put her hand on the heartbeat of the literacy crisis.
Denise has a unique ability to speak to diverse audiences about reading instruction and touches the hearts and minds of participants. In the past year she has been the keynote speaker at READ San Diego, was featured at the Literacy How Conference, trained public and private schools, spoken to thousands of parents, and provided an inservice training at the Minnesota Teacher's Union convention where one participant said, "Everyone is speaking about the problems with reading. Denise is the first person to bring us answers and hope."
Denise and her family founded Pedia Learning Inc. in 2010 to provide parents, teachers, and community leaders access to affordable books, curriculum, and software which includes accurate linguistic research, multi-sensory instruction, and incorporates the five strands of reading. Her first book, Uncovering the Logic of English has won four publishing awards, and been endorsed by Dr. Reid Lyon, Dr. Robert Sweet, Jr., and Dr. Temple Grandin.
